Favre: Champion, Diva or Both?

By Steven Shaffer, TheSportsHatch.com writer

Brett the Cheese Head, Brett the Jet, Brett the Viking, or Brett the Diva. How will you remember Brett Favre?

After 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, and one with the New York Jets, Favre is one win away from going back to the Super Bowl, this time with the Minnesota Vikings. He is playing as well as.....well, ever!

There aren't, and should not be, any questions about Favre's ability and legacy as a quarterback. He is a first ballot Hall of Famer, a Super Bowl champion, a multiple MVP award winner, an 11-time pro bowler, and a 3-time first team all-pro.

Even with all of that, there is a significant population of fans that don't like him. Packers fan feel betrayed, Jets fans feel slighted and annoyed, Atlanta Falcons fans wonder “what if”? The story of Favre's departure from Green Bay has been well chronicled.

Retiring, not retiring, going to the Vikings, then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and actually being traded to the Jets. One season, half good and half bad, and one hidden shoulder injury later, Favre became a Viking. That's where he lost most of the Packers and Jets fan. Packers fans due to anger and Jets fans due to disappointment.

With each proclamation and rumor of his decision to play or not to play, came a seemingly endless loop of SportsCenter highlights and supposed “insiders” who knew what was going to happen. All of them had just “gotten off the phone with” or “received a text message from” Favre with a coy statement enticing the reporter into thinking they had the next Watergate-type scoop. It had fans screaming either “I don't care,” or “make up your mind already!”

If there's one type of player that annoys most fans, it's divas. With all of his indecisiveness, Favre became the poster child for attention-seeking prima-donnas everywhere. One day he wanted to play, the next day, he didn't (unless it was for a certain team). I'd hate to be behind Favre at the supermarket when he's deciding between paper or plastic bags.

There was a time when people admired Favre. Playing the Monday night after his father passed away, playing all those games consecutively, the “gunslinger” mentality, playing the game like a kid who just wanted to play the game he loved. These are all traits most fans admire. Now fans have difficulty separating Favre the player and Favre's persona. So, what will be Favre's legacy? Great QB or supreme diva? Let the discussion begin.
